Antony Perring: Mixed Signals
Antony's first exhibition that explores the power of language, labels and identity through his modern quilting practice.
Mixed Signals is an exhibition of quilts and textile works by Clarence Valley based artist Antony Perring. Through the application of traditional patchwork and quilting, the collection explores how language is used to label and define people, places and things around us, and how that language can be used as a powerful tool to dictate identity.
Our use of language to define our sense of self is informed by the expectations of others; our own shame and insecurities, and fear to stand proud in our ‘otherness’. Coming out as gay or queer or trans we are supposed to gladly take on the language and label of an identity that has been loaded with negative connotation for generations. We are asked to wear that label proudly, bearing the weight of heteronormative culture and sit happily in our difference.
This exhibition asks us to consider why labels are applied, which group decides where the labels go, and when should the language be changed or disregarded altogether. Are the labels for us to better understand ourselves or are they to make it easier for others to define us?
This exhibition is on view from 1 July - 3 September 2023
